Our February stated meeting was "Sweethearts Night" and included a surprise visit from the brethren of Eureka Lodge. We brought SOs and were blessed to have many of the widows join us for dinner and a program.

The meeting was rather atypical. Lodge was opened early and called off-session. After a very pleasant (and well attended) dinner, everyone came up to the lodge room where we presented 5 ladies with a special Widow's Pin and introduced them to the Lodge. We gave them a taste of some of the non-private parts of our work so that the wives, widows, and visitors could get a feel for the work we love so much.

We would also like to thank the brethren of Daylight Lodge who came out to see the degree and help make the evening a success.

On November 11, 2011, University Lodge celebrated Veteran's Day with the gentlemen and ladies from the Naval ROTC program at the University of Washington. The speakers were from our own lodge, three WWII vets who shared their experiences and mementos from the war.

The evening began with a tasty Italian meal prepared by Peter Stratiev, a FC from our lodge who will receive his third degree on November 21. He is also the owner of Kabella's in Edmonds, something that has worked in the gastronomical favor of the lodge on several occasions. Entertainment was provided by a brass quintet from the UW School of Music.

Our speakers were three members of our own lodge who server during WW II. The first was Roscoe Mitchell, who was a gunner on a bomber flying our of Engand and over Europe. He recounted several amusing anecdotes from his training and the missions on which he flew.

Next was Warren Roundhill, a pilot who had begun his service with the English and later transferred to the U.S. Air Corps. He told how it felt to fight during this time in history and about the conditions under which they served. Of particular note was that he wore his uniform-- how many can still wear their uniform over 50 years later?

The final speaker was Arthur Shipe (left), who flew torpedo missions in the Pacific. His stories were facinating, beginning with the early years when the equipment often did not work, close calls, and successes as the war progressed. His stories of those who did not make it home were especially poignant. He brought with him quite a few artifacts, photographs, and magazine articles from that time.

We cannot overstate our gratitude to the men and women of the UW NROTC program, who joined us for the evening. These gentlemen and ladies seemed as captivated by the stories of our vets as were many of the younger lodge members. They were excellent dinner companions, well-spoken, impeccably mannered, and a lot of fun. They helped us honor three guys who richly deserve our gratitude, and their company enriched all of us. We wish them the utmost success in their careers.

On April 30, 2011, two carloads of brethren drove north to visit Canadian lodge University #91 in Vancouver. We arrived shortly after 11am and were treated to lunch and refreshments. Lodge opened shortly after 1:30 for the purpose of initiating three new brothers. University #91 works an old version of the Ancient work, which is fairly exotic to us. After a beautiful degree, we were the guests of our Canadian brothers for great food and great company. A warmer welcome would be hard to imagine.

See the slideshow for a few pictures of the event.

University Lodge has been richly blessed with visiting brethren from India, Mexico, Bulgaria, Italy...and that's just the last 3 months.

One of the perks of meeting right next door to a major research university is the opportunity to meet with fellow Masons from all over the world. Often, these are brothers who are here to study or join in research at the UW. They bring with them customs and traditions that are exotic, yet distinctly Masonic. The joy they bring to us is immeasurable.

See the slideshow showing us with some of our newly discovered friends.

Greetings from Bulgaria

'Twas the Night before Christmas, and down at the lodge,
not a gavel was stirring, and in the hodge-podge,
Of aprons and jewels and chairs East and West,
You could savour the silence, most gladly divest,
All metal and mineral, it mattered not,
Since Christmas was nigh and the coals were still hot.

In the hearth of your homeplace, all Masons abed,
As visions of trestleboards danced in their head;
When up on the roof there arose such a clatter
Our Tyler jumped up to see what was the matter!
He picked up his sword and ran fast to the door,
Three knocks shook the panels - he wondered 'What for?'

He answered the knocking with raps of his own,
And once the door opened he saw, with a moan,
Of delight it was Santa, all jolly and red,
Except for one notable feature instead!
Upon his large finger he wore what we knew,
Was compass and square on a background of blue!

'Why Santa!' he shouted and lowered his blade,
'I see you're a Mason!' the Tiler relayed.
He looked toward the Master's most dignified chair,
And said, voice near trembling, 'Most Worshipful there
Is a Gentleman properly clothed at the gate!'

The Master replied, 'Let's allow him - but wait!
You tell me a Gentleman, but I don't see,
His Apron beneath that red suit, can it be,
Our visitor hasn't been properly raised?
Must we offer a test that is suitably phrased?

'I do beg your pardon,' ol' Santa said quick,
As he pulled up his coat and displayed not a stick,
But a cane with engraving, two balls did appear,
And oh, what an apron, he wore and held dear!
Adorned like the Master's, complete with a sign,
Of "Lodge Number One, the North Pole" on one line!

"Now let this man enter," the Master declared,
And once in the Lodge room, the Brethren all stared,
For Santa was wearing a jewel not seen,
For many a century - there in between,
The fur of his coat and the splendid red collar,
Gleamed two golden reindeer that shone line a dollar!

"It's Donner and Blitzen, who I must confess,
"Are actually images brought from the West,
By my Warden, a craftsman like none in the world!"
And with a great laugh from his bag he unfurled,
An ear of fine corn, and some oil from the East,
"My friend I have plenty, tonight we will feast

On all that is good! We are Masons, kind sir!"
A murmur went throughout the Lodge, quite a stir,
As presents and promises flew from his sack!
This Santa, a Mason, showed he had a knack
For making this Christmas the best you could glean,
And soon even Deacons were laughing, they'd seen

On this very night only happiness reigned!
This jolly Saint Nicholas quickly explained,
That only a Mason could be so inclined,
To make all kids happy, make all people find,
A Christmas so special, yes, Santa was right!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Our secretary VWB Jim Smyth was installed as Master of Ark Lodge #126 in Tukwila.

The installing Master? None other than our own MWB Gale Kenney. Other University Lodge members assisting in the installation were VWB Michael Quadra and VWB Coe Tug Morgan.
